Carpenter Ants in Southern Maine: What Homeowners Need to Know This Spring
If you have noticed large black ants suddenly appearing in your home over the past couple of weeks, you are not imagining things. Many homeowners throughout southern Maine are dealing with the same issue right now.
As an Associate Certified Entomologist with more than 16 years of experience helping families in Cumberland and York Counties, I see this pattern every spring. Here is what is happening and what you can do about it.
Why Carpenter Ants Become Active in Spring Carpenter ants spend the winter inside their nests. When temperatures rise and the ground thaws in April, the workers wake up and begin foraging for food and water. This is the time of year when they are most likely to wander into our homes looking for resources.
Unlike many other ants, carpenter ants do not eat wood. They tunnel through it to create nesting galleries, which can cause damage over time if left unchecked. They prefer moist or decaying wood, so leaky roofs, poorly sealed windows, or damp areas in crawl spaces and basements are especially attractive to them.

How to Identify Carpenter Ants
- They are noticeably larger than most household ants, often 1/4 to 1/2 inch long.
- They are typically black, or black with reddish tones on the thorax.
- They have a single node (bump) at the waist and a smooth, rounded profile.
- You may see coarse sawdust (frass) near baseboards or windowsills if they are nesting nearby.
What You Can Do Right Now
- Keep counters and floors clean of crumbs and spills.
- Store food in sealed containers.
- Fix any moisture problems such as leaks or poor drainage around your foundation.
- Trim trees and shrubs so branches do not touch your house.
- Seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors, and utility lines.
The Bottom Line Seeing carpenter ants indoors in spring does not always mean you have an active nest inside your walls. Sometimes they are just foraging. However, it is a clear warning sign that you should address the issue before a small problem turns into a bigger one.
If you are seeing a steady stream of ants or finding piles of sawdust, it is best to have a professional inspection.
